18-Dec-2001 -- The confluence 54N 110W is located in the northeast corner of the Fishing Lake Metis Settlement and was very challenging because there is very little development in the area.

On 16-Dec my Uncle Walter and I attempted to reach the confluence from the north and west as we found several roads and even a campsite in the area, but at dusk we were still 12 Km away. However the day was sunny and warm and the drive through the Elk Point heavy oil field and through the Metis Settlement was fascinating. The narrow forest trails were safe as they were frozen with only 15 to 20 cm of snow on them.

On 18-Dec we got some much-needed assistance from my brother Marshall who works in the natural gas field in the area. He suggested we start on a resource road that heads north from secondary highway 641 at Onion Lake, AB. We drove through the aspen forest for about 30 Km, passing numerous gas wells, as the road weaved back and forth between Alberta and Saskatchewan. Eventually we got to a point about 1.5 Km southeast of our goal.

From there we used a Honda quad to follow an old siesmic cutline heading northwest into the bush. As soon as we entered the cutline we spooked 2 moose that insisted on running in front of us, as if to show the way. We followed the siesmic trials until we were 0.10 Km away. Then a short walk into the bush and the GPS read 54°00'001"N and 110°00'000"W.

This confluence would be much more challenging during the summer as we found the road deeply rutted where it crossed numerous marsh areas.
