19-Jun-2009 – Do you know what cave painting is? It is painting on cave walls and ceilings made by prehistoric men. The large majority of cave painting examples are known in Europe, they are in France and in Spain. The most famous is Lascaux cave. It was found in 1940, and since 1948 it was touristic object. But in 1963 it was close for public in the purpose to preserve unique paintings (dated 18600 years BC). Twenty years later a copy of Lascaux cave was opened nearby, named Lascaux II.

However there is less known cave paintings pattern at the Eastern edge of Europe. There is Shul'gan-Tash cave on Belaya river in Bashkortostan (Russia). There, in 1959 cave paintings were discovered (photo 11, photo 12) . Images dated 14000-15000 BC. The halls with paintings are now close for public, but the cave itself is opened, sightseers can observe precise copies of all paintings in the halls close to the cave entrance.

It's not an easy deal to get there. The only (so far) good road comes from the north, from Beloretsk city. Asphalt paving ends in Starosubkhangulovo, in 35 km from the cave, gravel road runs further. The cave entrance is located in 300 m from the Belaya [White] river, within Shul'gan-Tash state reserve, access is strongly checked. If you were lucky to get those lands then add some extra time and skip the turn to the cave, keep the same road ahead more 8.5 km till you meet the turn to Maksyutovo, turn there and then drive more 1 km. Stop! Now go 50 metres to the left from the road into the deciduous wood and here, staying at the edge of steep you can admire the scenery of Belaya river, which has local name Agidel'. Additionally if you'd have (by chance) GPS receiver with WGS-84 geodesic data setting, then you can surprise by remarkable GPS reading!

After visiting the confluence 53°N 59°E we drove to Shul'gan-Tash cave. In order to overcome 2 degrees along latitude we need to drive for 1 degree northwards at first. We made 3-hours-stop in Magnitogorsk city (Chelyabinsk region), and then we drove to the west, towards Bashkortostan and turned finally to the south after Beloretsk city. The road was quite scenic and led to Starosubkhangulovo, big settlement, administrative center of Burzyanskiy district, famous by its white honey and linden groves.

Well, everything happened next as above-described. We decided to visit the cave next morning, skipped the turn, drove further ahead and soon we reached the confluence point. Wonderful! That is an ideal place to organize lay-by spot for scenery breathtaking view. This confluence is nice, easy accessible, is located near the tourist attraction of world-wide importance. Recommended for everyone!

By the way, Lascaux cave is located in 15 km from 45°N E1° confluence, while Shul'gan-Tash is only 7 km from 53°N 57°E!
