#1: The Confluence - View to the East

(visited by Rainer Mautz and Elionora)

29-Apr-2007 – The story continues from 53N 25E, a confluence point that we had visited in the afternoon that day. After a short stopover in the little town Ruzany, we headed further west towards the Polish border in order to reach a third confluence this day.

6 km from the confluence, we came through the town Svislač. We continued on some county roads further west until the road ended at an abandoned military compound. We parked the car and hiked the remaining beeline distance of 1.63 km. There forest tracks are all straight (due to the fact that the terrain is flat) and make up squares. Unfortunately our GPS pointed in diagonal direction to the grid of tracks. We ended up with a nice zig-zag view of our track in the GPS display when we reached the confluence.

From the confluence, it is just another 4km to the Polish border. The point itself is located in a fir forest.

On our way back to the town Svislač we saw quite some military areas, soldiers and closed compounds nearby. When we tried to stay the night in Svislač, the police questioned us about our purpose of our stay. He warned us not to go into the Bialowieski Park (which is a south-west of the town) because this is closed (presumably for foreigners) area. We had the feeling that is a sensitive area and that we could have had trouble if the police would have seen us in the forests near the border.
