#1: From the Confluence towards Wicklow

(visited by Philipp Funovits, Anna Steiner and Morris Dunne)

10-Feb-2006 -- The confluence lies 3,2 km off shore in the bay of Wicklow Town. We figured that swimming and levitation wouldn't work, so the only reasonable choice left seemed to try reaching the confluence by boat. In the small wicklow harbour there are generally three types of ships to be found: freighters, trawlers, and small privately owned vessels.

Our hopes rested with employing a ship of the third (or maybe second) category. We asked around to find someone who would bring us out, but had no luck the first day. One of the men promised us to organise a means of transportation for the following day. When we met him the next morning he had bad news for us: No one was going out that day because of unfavourable weather, and even if they did, they wouldn't risk their neck and drag along some clumsy and inexperienced tourists. We were running out of time since we had only one day left to visit the confluence.

Unfortunately Winter is not the best season to score a boat trip. We tried desperatly to find someone to bring us out the following day, everyone we asked declined but told us, that Morris would be our man. Morris Dunne came indeed to our rescue. It turned out he was one of the men we talked to at the very first day. When we found him and explained what we were up to, he laughed bought us a pint in a local pub, told us not to worry and that he would (if the weather would at all permit it) bring us where we want to go on his boat.

Friday at ten we boarded Morris's "Channel Pride", and went with a little more than 5 knots towards the confluence. The trip there and back again took us about one hour. It was cloudy and cold but it was calm and didn't rain. It wasn't easy to nail the spot, but Morris handled the little ship expertly so we came as close as 15m.
