#1: confluence site looking east

(visited by Frank Majcenovic)

24-May-2002 -- This confluence is located within Wells Gray Provincial Park. The centerpiece being the 141 meter high Helmcken Falls.

From the town of Clearwater, I drove north on the Clearwater Valley Road for 35.8 km to a gravel road on the right just south of the Park info kiosk. This road is signed "Stillwater" (the Backroads Mapbook labels this road "McLeod Hill Rd.").

Past the maintenance yard and followed the signs for the "Stillwater Route trail". At the 40.6 km point, there is a large mud hole (4X4 with clearance only).

Reached the end of the road at 47.6 km and parked here. The GPS showed 2.2 km to confluence.

Followed the Stillwater Route trail which starts beside a sign "Grizzlies in area". (They are there! Saw tracks and heard running thru bushes... I carried bear spray, a small air horn, and 2 foot long machete. Probably all useless, but I felt better having something!)

Followed the trail until the confluence was about 540 meters away. Then bushwacked NW and uphill to confluence. The confluence is beside a small pond with skunk cabbage.

Remember: Ein gefutterter Bar ist ein toter Bar. So try not to feed them any of your limbs!
