19-Jun-2023 -- On June 19, 2023, the geodetic educational initiative 'Honorable Krakow Meridian' - in the person of surveyor Mariusz Meus - organized, together with the geographical circle of the 4th General Secondary School in Tarnów and the Association of Polish Surveyors branch in Tarnów, an educational walk devoted to geodetic curiosities in Tarnów. We set off from the railway station, towards point 50x21, along the way, introducing high school students to the basics of geodetic measurements and showing them the geodetic signs encountered along the way. At the old monument of point 50x21, i.e. the "Pielgrzym" erratic boulder from 1983 at Aleja Tarnowskich, I explained why point 50x21 has since moved 128 meters to the east. This is due to the introduction of the new WGS84 coordinate system in 1989, while the old point was set on the Soviet local ellipsoid, Krassowski42. Finally, we went to the nearby Wisława Szymborska Street, where the students first determined the location of the current 50x21 point on their own, based on GIS data from map portals, and then a land surveyor with a professional GNSS receiver determined the location of the 50x21 point with an accuracy of 1 cm. The point was marked provisionally with a wooden stake painted with paint. There are plans to place there a geodetic monument with an information board, commemorating Mieczysław Sobol, a land surveyor merit for the city of Tarnów, who has determined the old point 50x21 in 1983.
