#1: The Confluence from 80 m distance

(visited by Rainer Mautz and Elionora)

07-Jan-2017 -- This is the last out of five reports on reaching confluence points during our trip through Colombia. Two of them had not been visited successfully before. The story starts at 5°N 74°W and continues from 5°N 75°W.

On confluence day, we started from Honda, which is 60 km to the north-east of this confluence point. First we came through Armero, which is the starting point of the road that ascends 1000 m in the vertical. Armero is a former city with 30’000 inhabitants that was “washed away” by a flooding in 1985. The ruins can still be visited.

The steep road to the confluence is asphalted for the first half. As usual, the road conditions worsen as one approaches the confluence. Two kilometres before reaching the confluence point, we came through the tiny mountain village San Pedro.

At a distance of 138 m, we figured that we had reached the nearest point to the road. So we left the car and climbed up a steep canyon. We then left the canyon and ascended further over a meadow. But when we had reached the end of the meadow, we decided not to enter a property by climbing over a fence. This would have required to ask for permission of a landowner and would have taken a lot of time. But we had to drive back to Bogotá this afternoon, so we documented the confluence at a distance of 69 m.

There is a far view to the north-east towards the valley of Rio Magdalena.

We drove exactly the same way back and reached Bogota at 6:30 PM just after dusk.
