#1: The Confluence from 10 m

(visited by Rainer Mautz)

25-Jul-2012 -- This is the 16th out of 20 confluence points that I reached on a bicycle trip to the North-East of China. The narrative of the trip starts from 41°N 117°E.

The beeline distance from 48°N 128°E to this confluence is 75 km. But the road infrastructure made me cycle exactly 200 km to get there. I reached the town Shànggānlǐng (上甘岭区) in the evening. This little forest-industry town is just 3 km beeline from the confluence point. When I reached it in the evening, I had an hour of daylight left and thought that I would easily be able to visit the confluence before dawn.

My map didn’t show any details and I hadn’t looked at Google Earth before setting off. So I simply followed the arrow on the GPS display. At the end, it turned out that this way I was totally misguided. The straight line guided me into the wrong valley. I followed the river to the west and then headed north. After cycling 5 km and some unsuccessful attempts to cross the mountain range I had to give up.

The next morning at 5 AM I started a second attempt, following the river and the train line to the north. It turned out that this confluence visit would be the easiest of all: a little road of concrete slabs goes directly to the confluence point, missing it only be 30 m! So 15 minutes after my departure, I was already at my goal.

The confluence is located at the edge of the quartier Redmountain (Hóngshān, 红山). From the road, I entered an open gate to Hóngshān and found the confluence on a meadow. The area must have been used agriculturally, as some plastic cover for protecting the crops at low temperatures had been laid out at the exact confluence location. The area is populated; some houses of Hóngshān are within 50 m distance.

After the visit I had breakfast in Shànggānlǐng (上甘岭区).

Story continues at 48°N 130°E.
