04-Mar-2007 – Having acquainted with the Degree Confluence Project site, we decided to visit the nearest integer degree confluence point from our city, Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. This point is in the valley of Dolinka river.

On January, 28th, 2007 our group (Vyacheslav Melkiy, Valeriy Sakharov, Inna Lobishcheva, Elizaveta Nikonova and Valeriy Romanyuk) reached a rest-house on the northern part of Lesnoe village. There we left our car and went north along the coast of Mordvinov gulf. Having used a snowmobile «Yamaha», snowboards and our “two legs”, we finished our reconnaissance campaign on the coast, at the point with latitude N47°00'00''. The expedition allowed us to estimate the snow cover conditions and a time interval which would be necessary to reach confluence point.

On March, 4th, 2007 we again managed to get together. Early in the morning Valeriy S. has driven from the city on a snowmobile through mountain pass to Lesnoe village, the others have gone there by car. We left the car at 9.45 and went from the same rest-house to the north by a snowmobile with trailer. We had a bite near Razlomovka river’s mouth, and then drove onto a beach up to the point with latitude N47°00'00''. Having rounded the nearest cape, we begun ascent along the brook’s valley. It was possible to move up about 1.5 km westward by a snowmobile with the trailer, and then it got stuck in friable snow. At 11.45 we left snowmobile in a forest.

Further on we went by snowshoes. We had no enough snowshoes; and Valeriy R. went by skis. However to ski upwards, constantly bypassing bushes and trees, was more difficult, rather than without skis. Soon skis were left. Snowshoes turned out to be a good choice.

Almost continuous ascent on deep snow, frequently sideways to a quite abrupt slope – all that took away our strength and lot of time. Elizaveta, the lightest among us, was the first who reached the point. At 14.45 all participants were together at the spot N47°E143°. In half an hour after photographing all 4 cardinal directions and all members of the journey, GPS readings, we started descent.

Having gone down in brook’s valley, we dug out our snowmobile; and at 18.30 we reached rest-house. Here we divided again into two groups – driving by car and by snowmobile. During our driving along the coast we observed the rise of red Moon after eclipse. At 20.00 all of us returned to Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk and rushed to take warm baths.

We are grateful Degree Confluence Project for an idea of travel to interesting places which are rarely visited by people.
