13-Jul-2017 -- In die Gobi

Pferde, Weite, Wellblech.

13-Jul-2017 -- Into Gobi Desert

Horses, vastness, corrugated tracks. Seven confluences at Mongolia during Nadaam festival. This continues the story of 49°N 104°E.

A quick visit of Genghis Khan Equestrian Statue east-southeast of Ulanbaatar and then we start our trip straight southeast into Gobi Desert. While we travelling the lonley hot desert, there is only Trans-Siberian Railways running parallel to the tarmac.

At two thirds of the route to Sainshand, the confluence is placed just 6 kilometres from the tarred road. 10 kilometres in front of Tsomog there is a branch off to Eldev coal mine at a filling station. 4 km direction north we turn into a track direction E. After another 3.6 kilometres we reach a Ger. From here we drove 2.2 km cross-country between Ger and hills circling to confluence, where we zero by car. Afterwards we took another track back to the tarmac 4,5 kilometres southeast.

At Sainshand we visit a magnificent Trans-Mongolian Railway station and then left the tar roads. 35 km south of Sainshand we camped near Khamar Monastery.

Continued at 44°N 101°E.
