#1: looking to the west

(visited by Curt Christiansen)

01-May-2002 -- I was batting three out of four for this trip of confluence hunting when I headed out early in the morning to attempt two more. I went north on US83 from Hazelton, ND to I-94 taking it west through Bismarck/Mandan and across the mighty Missouri River. I turned south on ND6. I followed this across the rangeland to Selfridge, ND on the Standing Rock Reservation. Using my gazetteer and gps I went west out of Selfridge on a poorly maintained dirt road. Just east of longitude 101 my map showed a small road heading due south 3 miles to near the point. That road did not exist but a wheel drive could probably follow the fence line south. I doubled back to the east thru Selfridge and then south on Hwy 6 which becomes 63 in South Dakota. I crossed over into South Dakota and went west on US 12. Just east of Thunder Hawk, SD I turned north on SD 73 which in a mile became ND 49. Four miles north of the border and still on the Reservation I turned west on a well-maintained gravel road. When I neared the confluence I found a plowed field (pic4) with NO TRESPASSING signs posted on the east and west sides. On the east and north sides are gravel roads and on the west side of this narrow strip was a dirt path, like a section line. I knocked on the door of the closest home but got no answer. Since the dirt path and the field to the west of it were not marked with signs I drove down the path to the point directly west of the confluence. My gps said I was 175’ from the confluence. I took photos of the field (pic4) and also south (pic2), west (pic1), and north (pic3). I left the point at about 9:30am and headed back to Bismarck via ND 49 and I-94.
