#1: At the site looking north

(visited by Roger Kehm and Larry Simonson)

14-Oct-2001 -- We were able to drive to within about a half mile north of 44N-100W (10.9 miles NNE of Presho, Lyman County, South Dakota.) Good gravel roads and we found a place to pull off the road at a field entrance NNE of the site.

The temperature was about 40 F, bright sun with no clouds and a brisk WNW wind about 20-30 MPH. We left the vehicle about 7:45 AM for the 20 minute hike to the site.

The land is cropland - essentially level to very gently rolling. We walked SSW across approximately 1/2 mile of harvested sorghum and then went into a field of unharvested sunflowers for about an 1/8th of a mile to the site.

Since the sunflowers had yet to be harvested, we tested the heads to see that the seeds did not drop when touched or moved. We then walked carefully to the site without knocking down any of the stalks.

We had 2 GPS's and they worked perfectly - agreeing to within 5-10 feet. The GPS's were of different makes.

A pleasant walk even though the sunflowers slowed us down a bit and in the field there was no place to sit and take pictures.
