#1: The Confluence from 10m

(visited by Rainer Mautz)

14-May-2024 -- This is the 6th out of 7 reports visiting confluence points during a one-week bicycle trip from Budapest to Podgorica. The story starts from 47°N 19°E and continues from 44°N 18°E.

On confluence day, I had an early start again: I got up at 5 AM and started cycling at 5:30 AM from my hotel in the ancient part of Mostar. Again, the early start allowed me to escape the city before the morning rush-hour would begin. At 9:00 AM I had already cycled through the historic place of Stolac and had reached the turnoff to the confluence from the main road M6. Since I was coming from the north, I didn’t think much about alternatives and approached the confluence from the north. After crossing an animal gate, I continued on a rough and steep track up to a distance of 1.2 KM. But from there, I could not find the track according OpenStreetMap. I followed some cow tracks but progress was slow. I now learned that my approach was wrong and considered reversing. But going back now would have been a rather large investigation as well. So, I pushed on, always trying to stay on some kind of track because I assumed that there wouldn’t be any risk of stepping on landmines on a beaten track. By criss-crossing on such tracks, I slowly approached the confluence point and found it finally on a rather open plot of land with grass, flowers, bushes and tiny oak trees. The confluence is actually on a kind of path. But I could not follow it on my way back, because I had to track-back to my bicycle. I reached the main road 3 hours after I had left it.

After my visit, I continued on tiny roads and reached the border town Bileca in the evening.
