#1: The Confluence from 60 m distance

(visited by Rainer Mautz)

24-Jan-2016 -- This is the second out of two reports reaching confluence points in Southern France.

Coming from 43°N 1°E, I continued cycling over the Col de Portel (1432 m), through the town Foix and spend the night in a Chambre d'hôtes in Saint-Jean-d'Aigues-Vives (20 km from this confluence point).

On confluence day, I started at 7:15 AM from my nice host family and found my way to the confluence within 1.5 hours. The sun had just risen, but since the confluence point is located in a valley, it was still in the shade.

The confluence is located in an apple orchard. Access is very easy from the nearby road (80 m) via a ramp down into the valley. The orchard is not fenced. The only challenge is to guess the right row of trees before entering the plantation, because it is not so smooth to change between rows once you have entered it. Interestingly, there were a lot of old apples still hanging on the trees from last year. Some of them seemed to be perfect, but didn’t taste as good as they appeared.

I continued cycling and reached the medieval town of Carcassonne for lunch. In the evening I reached Narbonne from where I took a night train back to Mulhouse and caught another train to Zurich.
