#1: The Confluence from 10 m Distance

(visited by Rainer Mautz)

30-May-2022 -- This is the second out of 3 confluence visits during a one-week trip to the USA. The story continues from 39°N 76°W.

While visiting Philadelphia’s Penn Museum and the Barnes Foundation, we spent the night in the Sleep Inn Cinnaminson - Philadelphia East. It is a typical motel where you can do not much more than sleep. But the most important property of this place was its 2 km distance from this confluence point.

Knowing that the confluence was located in the middle of a golf course, I thought that the best time for a visit would be when there were no golfers around. The day was going to be nice and sunny. And it was Memorial Day, which is a national holiday in the US and I expected a busy golf course. Therefore, I left the hotel at 5:40 AM and walked over to the confluence point. And indeed, I found the golf course of the Riverton Country Club totally empty. Right on hole no. 4, about 30 m from the hole itself, I located the confluence. The point is on the putting green, where the lawn is extremely short. I peacefully documented the confluence and also found the stone plate with the inscription 40º 00’ 00’’ N. LATITUDE and 75º 00’ 00’’ W. LONGITUDE about 5 m from my measured location.

What I hadn’t noticed in the heat of the battle was, that the caretakers of the golf course had already started their job. And one of them approached me directly in his golf cart. He knew the existence of the confluence point, but nevertheless asked me to leave – what I was already about to do anyway.

After the visit, I walked a mile further until I reached Delaware River, where I enjoyed a great swim.
