#1: View SW toward the confluence in the foreground

(visited by Gavin Roy and Finn Roy)

04-Nov-2021 -- My son and I set aside a couple of hours to hit this confluence during a two-night farm stay an hour east of Wichita. We drove north from Severy through Hamilton, arriving at 11:50am after a 5-minute delay behind a road striper and a few wrong turns around Virgil (Google Maps had us driving literally through the Verdigris River. The tributary to the north of the confluence was still running pretty high so we parked across the river slightly farther away, at the bend of the road to the northeast of the confluence, the same place Joseph Kerski parked a few months back. It was 49 deg. F and overcast with a light breeze.

We stepped through unmarked barbed wire and paralleled the N-S fence southward for five minutes across quite a bit of muck and standing water that was draining into the pond to the west. We then cut WSW, through a few stands of trees and across two streams thin enough to hop across with Finn in my arms, who delightedly held the GPS as the numbers ticked down. Two more sizable hills and we arrived at the confluence, which had an expansive view to the northwest. The terrain of Kansas's Flint Hills is unexpected and beautiful, even in the late fall.

The confluence lies on active cattle grazing land, but nary a cow was seen or heard. We zeroed out the GPS, took the requisite pictures including a selfie (always fun!) then headed back from whence we came. We were away from the car for 35 minutes, and away from the farmhouse and the rest of our family for 2 hours 10 minutes. This was my third confluence in Kansas. 10% done!
