#1: View North

(visited by Ross Finlayson)

27-Sep-2017 -- It was a beautiful warm autumn day in the San Francisco Bay Area, so I decided to pay a visit to Point Reyes, which I knew would be free of fog today. En route, of course, I had to visit this Degree Confluence Point, which I had previously visited 10 years earlier, in September 2007. As I noted back then, it’s a remarkable coincidence that this point happens to lie on land. It should really be in the ocean.

The point looked exactly the same as it did 10 years ago: Scrubby grass, on a north-facing slope, within a dairy farm. To the north, there’s a prominent irrigation pond; to the east, there’s a cluster of farm buildings (with a glimpse of Drake’s Bay beyond). To the west and north, there’s a view of the Pacific Ocean (with a small sliver of visible beach).

Because this is such a scenic location, I would have loved to have sent up my drone to record an aerial video (as I have done during several of my recent confluence visits). Unfortunately, however, the point is located within the Point Reyes National Seashore - administrated by the National Park Service - and is therefore off-limits to drones.
