31-Jan-2002 -- I am on a short tour of the USA, working in California for four days, then a long weekend in Texas for pleasure. We'll see how many points we can fit in and how far we drive in the process.
I noticed from the web site that this point did not get an exact spot on visit the last time. In fact from the write-up it is not clear just exactly how close the visit was, but the GPS shot shows about 55 feet. I believe though that SA was in force back in '99 and the narrative suggests that Mr Mochizuki didn't leave the road. Time for a revisit with some more accuracy.
It was a good 120 miles from where I was staying, a nice drive down under a crystal clear powder blue sky; it was only 45 degrees though, not much warmer than it was at home. I pulled off 99 South at Madera and after driving through town I found County 145 and turned East. After a couple of miles I found the back road on the left that takes you towards the point.
It was clear that the point was on the land of a nice looking house. I parked on the road and walked down the access road - guess what? The point was on the road! I carried on to the house where I found the owner building some birdcages - he is going to breed songbirds. He also owns a lovely friendly collie dog, who had got bitten by a bigger dog the day before - lots of stroking and fussing was in order.
I explained what I was doing and we had a chat for about 15 minutes - the project and life in general. I could go and take whatever pictures I wanted. I thanked him for his hospitality and set about recording the visit. First off was the North facing shot (Pic 1), followed by my looking West (Pic 3) and looking East (Pic 4)
Pic 5 shows a collage of shots of the GPS detailing: the exact location, accuracy and elevation. The last picture is panoramic sweep from West to East looking North while standing on the spot. With this one in the bag it was on to the next point in my American tour, 37N 122W.
