20-Feb-2013 -- 17th Annual International Confluence Day (Part 2):

After leaving 35N 83W, I made my way to I-40 as quickly as possible, on a four hour, 220 mile drive to central North Carolina. Once reaching the interstate, the traffic was not bad, and the day’s weather was gorgeous, with hardly a cloud in the sky: just perfect conditions for confluence hunting!

At Winston-Salem, I turned southeast on US-311 (the future I-74). As I approached the manmade Oak Hollow Lake, I turned south on Johnson Street, then east on Lakecrest, and then south on Centennial to "Watermark at Oak Hollow," the home of this confluence point.

With most folks off at work (apparently International Confluence Day is not yet a recognized holiday in Guilford County), the neighborhood looked a little deserted. Conditions are little changed since Ross Finlayson’s visit in April 2011, however, I did not see the prominent log visible in his pictures, and 1235 Watermark Court no longer sports a “For Sale” sign. The bright clear mid-day sun combined with the drab winter vegetation to give all my pictures a washed out appearance, but a few early flowers provided evidence that Spring is on the way.

This stop marks the 21st state in which I have visited a confluence point on ICD, going back a full decade: AL (2004), MS (2005), GA (2006), IA, MO, KS, & NE (2007); TN (2008); AR (2009); NH, VT, NY, CT, & MA (2010); IN, OH, & KY (2011); WI & IL (2012); and now in 2013, both of the Carolinas. I would have liked to linger, but to add #22 to my list, I still had another three and a half hour, 220 mile drive before sunset…
