#1: Confluence point

(visited by Craig Hall)

06-Feb-2006 -- This confluence hunt began in Memphis, Tennessee. I was traveling for work from Memphis to Cherokee Village, Arkansas (a very beautiful town I might add). The most direct route between these two cities is Hwy 63, which travels through Hoxie, Arkansas. The confluence point is about 3 1/2 miles South of Hoxie.

In Hoxie, I turned South onto Hwy 67. After roughly 3 1/2 miles on Hwy 67, I turned east onto Lawrence County Road 706. I followed this gravel road for about a mile, which led right to the irrigation ditch. I parked the rental car next to the irrigation ditch and walked the rest of the journey. The field appeared wet, but the area right next to the irrigation ditch was somewhat covered with grass, and was an easy and dry walk. I followed the ditch north (on the west side of the ditch) until I reached the 36N parallel.

The field where the confluence exists looked fairly muddy (although not quite as wet as it appeared for the prior visit to this confluence). I did not pack boots, but did have on a pair of tennis shoes I was willing to sacrifice. The precise confluence point was approximately 450 feet east of the irrigation ditch. Although the field was indeed quite muddy, I was able to make it without too much trouble.

Overall, this confluence was rather simple. The key is to find and use the Lawrence County Road 706 that leads right to the irrigation ditch.
