#1: Confluence Picture

(visited by Kevin Horan)

31-Aug-2001 -- I decided to try for this confluence on my way from Baton Rouge, LA to Hot Springs, Arkansas to visit Connor and Casey (my two wonderful children). It seemed like it would be more or less on the way for a route from BR up through north Louisiana and Mississippi into south Arkansas. Roads were tricky, and the weather did not cooperate (several inches of rain had fallen in the last few days and the unpaved roads near the site were a challenge for 4WD, let alone my little RAV4 rollerskate). After taking a few wrong turns, and using the ETrek I bought on the way out of town and DeLorme's Street Atlas USA RE Edition linked to my notebook, I found the turnoff to the road depicted in the Mapquest, topo and aerial photos I had studied on the webpage. The turn off is a bit north of the little town of Glendale and takes you into mixed pine, rural residential and what appears to be a large lot of deer hunting reserve.

After getting as close as I thought I could get to the confluence, I took off into boggy pine woodlands following my ETrek. After a few hundred yards or so, and a multitude of flying bugs the size of small household pets, I got to the spot. For future reference, there is a dirt track/semi-road that cuts off the "main" dirt road east of the confluence that would make access much easier (I found it on the way back). While the confluence point itself was not particularly remarkable, this part of SE Arkansas is very pretty--the country around Star City is very nice, with many farms and some forest.
