#1: Looking north

(visited by Gordon Spence)

03-Feb-2002 -- Buoyed by the success of 30N 99W, it was approaching 4pm when I arrived in the vicinity of 31N 99W; following 71S I turned left onto Farm Route 501 heading North. After a few miles CR373 beckoned on the left; this passed to within just over 2 miles of the point.

Following it on for a couple of miles it became suitable really only for 4 wheel drive - and a Chevy Impala definitely isn't that! Backtracking to 71N I found CR381 - apparently freshly cut, the equipment was still there (Pic 5); which eventually became CR373 again....this wasn't going to be easy!

Back to my original closest approach on CR373, the land appeared to be owned for the public benefit (Pic 2), so I hopped the fence and set off through low grassland. After half a mile I came to a boundary fence, the other side of which was a herd of cattle, containing two large bulls of about 2 tons each....stop for a think (very brief think).

Turning to walk away I took the looking north shot (Pic 1); the closest point was 30D 57M 44.5S / 99W.

Going back towards 71S, there was some sort of facility on the left, guarded by the invisible man (Pic 3) who works for (Pic 4).

Another attempt, so it was on to Burnet (via LLano) for the night. Where I spotted a new use for ex-WWF stars (Pic 6). 302 miles today, 1506 in total and I fly home tomorrow.

Continued to 31N 98W.
