14-Nov-2004 -- Again one week off, the Ramaḍān-Holidays. And again one week to explore the Sa`udi nature. And again it was scheduled to visit some confluence points...

The Great Nafūd desert attracted our attention since a long time due to the amount of undiscovered confluence points. There were some changes necessary. But the first night shortly before we reached the city of Ḥā'il was almost the last night on this trip because a thunderstorm hit us. Due to the nice and dry weather all year long I had not fixed our roof tent in a proper way, so the tent started to become a sail. Two bars and some seams needed a temporary repair on the next morning.

If you are in this area, it is worth to visit the historical museum in Jubba. Unfortunately, we could not get a permission to see the ancient rock art. To make sure we would take the correct way out of Jubba, a police car escorted us out.

After another night in the desert we changed the direction towards west and the confluence 28N 40E. The driving was much more difficult and slower than expected. The sand dunes are full of shrubs and bushes. Big and deep bowls forced us to drive long distances to get around. For a point-to-point distance of 86 km off-road we had to drive 160 km in total. It took us 8 hours to get there and 80 litres of gasoline.

After we had reached the confluence point we had to change our route. The very high fuel consumption forced us to look for a village with a gas station. 50 km south of the Confluence we could find a small village. The first family we met invited us for tea, coffee and dates. But we did not take the offer to prepare a goat for us.

In the mountains nearby the village we have found some very nice rock arts, an appreciated compensation for the change of our route.
