#1: Confluence point

11-Jan-2013 -- On a brief visit to Dubayy we quickly realized that big time shopping is not our priority. The city has some impressive architecture, amazing network of roads (up to eight lanes in each direction!), and 30 enormous shopping malls larger than the Harrods in London. The maps we got hold of were not very good, the maps I had downloaded for my Nokia Lumia 920 were good but in Arabic and the public transportation services limited.

Taxi is the answer, i.e. if you happen to be in the central areas of town. Having your own car is another answer. A couple of days with hectic sightseeing and we headed back to the airport and rented a car with a good Garmin navigation unit with Latin letters on the maps. We set off for Masqaṭ in Oman, aiming at the inland road via `Ibriy and Nizwā.

We crossed the border between Dubayy and Oman at the al-Buraymiyy border post. A few kilometers along the main highway No. 21 we took to the left on a metalled road through an arid landscape with only the odd stubborn tree here and there. About 15 km onwards the GPS sent us to the right and after about 2-3 km we were at a point about 80 m from the actual confluence point. Too easy!
