#1: Confluence point

(visited by John Dag Hutchison)

24-Oct-2009 -- Starting in Chiangmai early morning I took the 118 towards Chiangrai and turned east at Baan Mae Kha Jaan in direction of Payao. Getting to A1 I headed south towards the confluence point. Unlike the first visitors I approached the confluence point from the north, i.e. I drove southwards on A1, but took to the southeast when I saw a big sign pointing to Phayao Breeding Station. That road headed in the right direction, but became more and more narrow as it entered forests and fallow lands and grazing cattle. Too deep mud on the road for the Honda Jazz left me with about 2 km's trekking to the cp. I continued on the road I had been driving, but soon found it was heading too much south. Then the actual trekking began going through a small forest, through maize fields, some bean crops and what other have called the nasties: thorny bushes and plants that grab you and won't let you go on. The walking stick helped in this matter, beating them down before they caught me.

Just near the confluence point was a small shed with two men having their lunch. They invited me to join them, and the mug of water was really what I needed there and then. They also told me that the road I had abandoned made a big bend and in fact passed close to the confluence point. From the point there was not much to be seen, just being in the middle of a maize field.

The return to the car was consequently both quicker and easier. Luckily I reached the car just before the rain caught me. I headed out of the landscape and the cattle trodden road and was driving through the rain for the next two hours. This time I drove southwards and returned to Chiangmai via Lampang and Lamphun, a much easier drive. The total milage of the day was more than 500 km, a bit too much for an old fellow....
