12-Nov-2008 -- Hombori Mountain tour

Africa Overland in stages. This trip lead us mainly through Mali heading back to our car park at Sukuta Camping in Gambia.

Coming from Burkina and 14N 3W we drove along the Falaise de Bandiagara and visited Dogon Country. After a small detour to Mopti where we had to fix some springs, we where ready for a further confluence point.

We left the road about 35 km west of Hombori heading straight south for the next 15 km. First on fast tracks through a dry sabkha (flat plane, high in salt) in front of the great picturesque Hombori Mountain scenery. After a sandy pass we followed donkey cart tracks in a oued (dry river bed), passing a little village, and managed a first time zero digit approach with the car. But had to leave the Toyo at least for the pictures ;-).

Instead of driving straight back to the tarmac, we decided to continue directly to "Fatima's Hand", and drove about 35 km northeast through very picturesque scenery and beautiful little clay architecture villages.

Continued at 16N 1W.
