06-Ene-2010 --

06-Jan-2010 --

Following the hunting trio started on January, 2nd 2010, it was scheduled the last and most dangerous adventure for this day January, 6th 2010. That morning we did not leave early, we were on vacation, so without haste we started our day of “adventure tourism” from the beautiful city of Cartagena de Indias, and we drove a total of 673 km between several departments (Bolivar, Magdalena, Cesar and Atlantico ), municipalities and many major cities in Colombia as are Aracataca (where is the writer and Nobel Prize for literature Gabriel Garcia Marquez), Ciénaga, Barranquilla, Santa Marta (where our Liberator Simon Bolivar died in 1830).

That morning in company of my wife Monica and son Emanuele, I followed the same path that in December 20th 2009 I used to reach PC 1075, but in N9 59 22.4 W75 04 37.1 continue south along the "Road 25" about 36 km to the municipality of El Carmen de Bolívar, turned to east, driving some 158 km along on "Road 80" through the towns of Zambrano with its spectacular marsh, and Plato until arriving at Bosconia, where we turned to north taking "Road 45”, driving to El Copey, which would take us in N10 03 09.7 W73 55 15.1 to turned to west towards our objective PC 1074, in the department of Cesar, that was at 10 km distance in a straight line. It was 1:47 pm.

Here is in fact where the adventure to the unknown begins, because we had to get in huge lands and spectacular cattle farms, which were guarded by the army and a “private networks of care", with transit restrictions.

In N10 02 31.7 W73 56 28.4 after our turn to west, we find the railroad project that links the coal region of the Loma Santa Marta, which crosses the city of Santa Marta, municipalities of Ciénaga, Aracataca y Fundación of the Magdalena Department and Bosconia, El Copey and El Paso in the Cesar Department, interconnecting itself with the railway line that Alfredo Remón crossed to reach in May 2009 in Colombian Guajira, the CP 1272

Once inside the land, helped with my Nuvi 885T and the final closing with the Oregon 550, traveled about 10 km, passing by many cattle and dairy ranches, where we could appreciate the majesty of animals, accompanied in the course by typical vallenato music of an artist very famous and appreciated by me, Jorge Celedon, At 2:11 pm we were in front of El Amparo ranch, just 2.9 Km from the goal, but a large obstacle!!!!, the gate was closed and we have not seen in the vicinity of this farm to anyone to ask permission to try pass to the property.

We decided to continue the road and see if there were some other way or property that allowed us to arrive to get the point. So I drove other 2,4 km, until arrive at N10 01 03.1 W74 01 19.1, where nothing else could be done, and in that moment I was distant of CP 1074 again to 3,1 km, and a local guy in the area alerted me that there is not way to continue ahead with the SUV.

During the last 2.4 km, we found several people, being Mr. Jorge who approached us with a bike and stopped so I explain to him the purpose of our adventure, but he was not very well convinced and he told me that these farms were well guarded with limited access due to many robberies, I asked him for help. We insisted and finally agreed and we went to El Otoño ranch at N10 01 23.4 W74 00 35.1, where Mr. Jorge jumped the gate and went to talk with the guy responsible of that farm, we were at 2.8 km in a straight line of CP 1074. It was 3:00 pm and we were hunger, the snacks had done their job, but we had to eat something else, so we had some canned tuna of an important client that I have in the city of Cartagena, and we made our very environmentally picnic in just the 30 minutes while we were waiting for Mr. Jorge.

Mr. Jorge retuned and said to us that the guy who is taking care of the property did not give permission, and that we need to meet and talk to other people of the zone. In just 5 minutes appear two people in motorcycle, Luis Manuel Vizcaíno the pilot and his friend, that form part of the private networks of care in the area and explain them our mission. At 3:40 pm we enter El Otoño ranch followed by Luis Manuel and his friend and seeing the target distance decreased and decreased, until suddenly the track ends at N10 00 54.8 W74 00 45.7, so I talked to Luis Manuel and told him that we should look for a new approach and made reference to El Amparo ranch, which he did not like too much because it belongs to a very important person in the area, but after discussions he agreed to explore.

At 3:50 pm we were back in front of El Amparo ranch, 1 hour 50 minutes after we had notice, but now with the great possibility to enter it. The inner door was opened and we journeyed toward the south of the entrance, all excited seeing the CP as the distance decreased quickly and directly, stopping my car at just 15 meters from the target, we could not believe after so many constrains to achieve the objective in the car!!!!.

We got off the car, leaving the Nuvi and with the help of Oregon 550, in a few seconds my son Emanuele founded the zeros, something as well as a magnet that it attracts by his magnetic force the metal, the Oregon 550 stuck to the coordinate 10N 74W. It was 4:06 pm and the same is located at 75 masl. The respective photos are taken, and started the long comeback that we had, it was already 4:20 pm when we left El Amparo ranch.

Up to sunset, we continued passing immense cattle properties and plantations for the palm oil extraction, between the Copey and passing Fundación.

We made a stop in Barranquilla for dinner in a spectacular Mall Buena Vista, that normally I visit when I make the route Cartagena - Barranquilla in my business trips, also to make stops for lunch and recreation.

Finally we reached our place of departure in condominium located in Cartagena Laguna Club at 10:30 pm, very pleased with the journey made, as I mentioned at the beginning was 673 km of road in perfect condition and good police and military protection, just only poorly between El Carmen de Bolivar and Bosconia.

The next day we enjoyed a spectacular trip to El Rosario islands, Majagua specifically, with a tour package offered by the Hotel Santa Clara, which I highly recommend, ending the night in the not less spectacular Walled City, emblematic icon of the City of Cartagena.
