#1: Point under the sun

(visited by Bob Greschke, Shridhar Anandakrishnan, Don Voigt, Peter Braddock, Ash Morton, Anatoly Mironov, Matt Nolan, Leo Peters and Paul Winberry)

25-Dec-2002 -- This was the last of four points that was visited by me on my trip to Antarctica (See 82S 120W). Just a few kilometers before this point the surface of the "ground" (the real ground was at least a kilometer below the surface of the snow) started to become smooth enough to allow us to travel on our snowmobiles at a reasonable speed without getting our brains beat out. The hard surface snow in the area was getting fairly smooth before we got to the point, but a nice layer of new soft snow, which was actually frost, in the area of the point helped to further cushion the blow of the sastrugi. Anatoly Mironov and Don Voigt using their GPSRs verified the point's position. We were all within two meters of each other, which we thought was pretty good. Others that visited the point were Shridhar Anandakrishnan, Peter Braddock, Ash Morton, Matt Nolan, Leo Peters and Paul Winberry.
