31-Oct-2011 - A CONFLUENCE DESPITE A SHOCK ABSORBER

This confluence was the forth one of the trip LATITUDE 50, undertaken by the same team of friends that had conquered LATITUDE 48 in year 2009.

Complete trip with details and pictures, click here.

We came from an difficult confluence, the 49°S 70°w and from a complex breakdown in one of the vehicles.

Gobernador Gregores is a small city that has grown due to the mining activities but it wasn’t able to supply the spare parts for a permanent repair, except in case that we waited a couple of days for them.

Then, we decided to make a provisional repair and to move, even if it was slowly, to San Julian, where to get the spare parts was easy and fast.

Besides, with a little luck, we could do a confluence during the trip to San Julian on RP25, if the access isn’t very complex.

At first, due to the provisional repair of the shock absorber, we went with fear up to 40 kmph but then we drove up to 70 kmph if the surface of the road was good.

So, the distance to San Julian was reduced firmly and then, when we passed near the confluence, we decided to go for it.

We entered by a unlocked gate and after 10 km we put us 1.5 cross country km of the confluence, without human obstacles. There we left my repaired car and we to the target mounted on the other two vehicles. Without problems, except crossing a small ravine, we reached the fourth capture of the trip defeating the mechanical breakdowns of my car.

We returned doing until RP25 in the same way and we continued to San Julian.

Near of Hotel Bellavista, the path to the next planned confluence, the 49°S 68°W appeared and encouraged by the previous, we went on. But a couple of km after, a gate with padlock blocked our advance. At 22 km of the goal, it wasn’t careful to enter and then we decided to attempt it from RN03. Meanwhile I fixed my car at San Julian, the others would go to the confluence.

Around 5:00 p.m. we arrived to San Julian, where a friend waited for us with news around the spare parts: they would be here only at night.

We had to wait, so we put on force the plan: Two vehicles went to the confluence and I stayed here to prepare for the replacement of the shock absorber.

Additionally, my friend offered to prepare a barbecue for the dinner. When the hunters returned, we would had ready the dinner and my car ready for receiving the replacement.

The other hunters without me were unsuccessful and they had been content with the delicious barbecue and very good wine for dinner.

At the end of it, my shock absorber arrived, we installed immediately and we went to sleep for recovering energy.

Tomorrow we should recover time because the saga of parallel 50th started with the coastal confluence 50°S 68°W.
