CONFLUENCIA -44º -70º. Laguna Negra.

CONFLUENCE 44ºS 70ºW. Black lagoon. Chubut, Argentina by Leandro Lema, Silvia Lo Moro, Raine Golab and Susana Dominguez

A few months passed by since our attempt in October, when we reached the lake but the wind made it impossible to navigate it. It’s been a very long period of time that took us to find the contacts, to check the routes, paths and tracks and the forecast from NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration). Finally all the conditions seemed to be perfect to go hunting on Sunday January 23rd, 2011, although the weather was supposed to be rather warm.

We left Esquel at 5:00, we drove down National Route Nº 40 passing by the town of Tecka, then we moved on to Gobernador Costa (which lies 185 km from Esquel), and 10 kms ahead is the town of José de San Martin. There ended the asphalt and our journey went on gravel, about 50 km to the lagoon Negra. The region is predominantly rural.

On barely visible sectors of the road, we had to use the 4x4 system, sometimes the presence of sharp rocks made it risky for the tires; we crossed several gates, and after climbing two mountain ranges following the same road, we got to the track to approach the south coast of lake Estancia Vieja, or as it is called by locals, lake Negra.

To get closer to the shore we had to move over "champas", the name is given to compact herbaceous plants, consisting in this case of coirones (stipa speciosa), neneos (Mulinum spinosum), and other native species of the steppe. This vegetation had grown up since our previous trip in October.

We carefully avoided the ditches formed by the rain during the last 1 km stretch, from there on we had to carry the equipment about 200 meters to the edge of the lagoon as the soil was not firm enough for the vehicle.

After inflating the raft, loading the camera, GPS, and everything we needed to get to the point, we set out to row the one kilometer that separated us from the confluence.

The area is steppe, real deep Patagonia. Some "Menuco" (small swamp) favors the settlement of some isolated population, with some green around it. It is a region of extreme temperatures and no shade at all, winters with heavy snowfall and strong winds throughout the year, conditions that make it hard to choose a day to get there, and with proper conditions to navigate the lake.

The lagoon, inhabited by thousands of birds, was located at an altitude of about 1105 meters according to the GPS, and during our visit it offered us a wonderful aquatic diversity: flamingos, black-necked swans, ducks of various species, coots and grebes (Podicipedidae).

The lake’s level had dropped and its water was slightly salty; it has a very muddy bottom with abundant aquatic plants that would stick out a few inches from the surface. It’s depth reaches 7-9 meters, as we were told by the land’s administrator. These aquatic plants hindered rowing, forcing us to tow the boat along the shore to get near the confluence point located on the north shore of the lake.

At times hundreds or thousands of birds began to fly by our side or over our heads, and we could only hear the flapping of their wings, transforming the moment into a magical one. In contrast, the terrestrial wildlife was rather poor and we could only see some European Hares during our journey.

The confluence was finally reached at 12:15 pm. on a day with moderate wind and a 29º C.

On our return Mr. Mariñanco, one of the shepherd of the ranch, was waiting for us on the shore, and he stayed with us until we left the lagoon Negra.

The waning moon had paled during the morning, the sun presided the entire journey over the vast and deep steppe, until dusk wrapped us in wonderful and intense colors.

After paying a visit to the next shepherd, Mr. Vicente Ayilef, we came back using the same road. The intense heat in Gobernador Costa advised us to take a break to refresh and hydrate ourselves, arriving at Esquel feeling happy for all that we had experienced that day, around 21:30 pm.

Adventures like today’s, beyond the satisfaction of the achieved goal, leave us the taste of friendship and fellowship, strengthened and renewed by the hours of a shared experience.

We thank Mr. Gustavo Beltran for allowing us to entry his property, and for the advice and information, making it easier for us to access this confluence.
