03-Apr-2007 -- WHERE MAMUELITO LIES DOWN

As per agreed the night before, we met for breakfast in the hotel early morning; we have recovered the energy and the spirit reduced yesterday due to the unsuccessful visit to 41°S 69°W.

We went out by Route 23 with SW course to Mamuel Choique, a very small town where we had located the first detour for approaching to the next confluence. We believed that the access to this confluence wouldn’t be very friendly due the aspect from the satellite photos although we had clear theoretical tracks near of it.

Apparently we would have to drive across a wide dried riverbed and we wouldn’t know the characteristic of the terrain. Intuitively, we guessed to find volcanic sand but, anyway, we were ready for facing whatever difficulty to return to the success.

When we found the detour on Route 23, we turned left and we began to go without hassles because the path would seem enough used. Some kilometers ahead, we turned right by a blur path that should lead us across the riverbed to the confluence. The distance was reduced continuously but there were no signs of the riverbed.

When we were at 400 meters of the confluence, we went directly to it doing cross country due the terrain was firm and the bushes weren’t very aggressive.

With a big emotion, at the end, we could park our 4WD on a confluence. It isn’t very common that happens and symbolically we faced the cars aligned on the parallel 42; in the middle, this time we built a special memorial with old bones collected by the surroundings, named “Mamuelito”, remembering a strange prehistoric animal and using the name of the near town, Mamuel Choique.

We felt an excitant loneliness and quiet on this place and we were very happy with the capture because our previous job at home was perfect and besides we could forget our yesterday’s frustration.

We returned by the other alternative approach that we had in our GPS and then we found the riverbed that we had seen in Earth Google. Once we “forded” it without water but in the second time with some of water.

So, we came back on Route 23 to Jacobacci City for preparing for the zigzagging trip around the parallel 42 for catching a couple of confluence more. The next one, the 42°S 69°W, placed in highlands in the middle of an area of isolated mountains.
