A CONFLUENCE INSIDE OF CHADILEUVÚ BASIN

This confluence was one of the multiple goals of the Agua Poca Expedition that, among others, was to crown one of the three volcanoes and to visit the last three “unvisited” confluences of La Pampa province.

Two years ago, the confluence 37°S 67°W was attempted unsuccessfully by us, but now it had an easy forecast for capturing: a “route” showed in the classic maps of Argentine Automotive Club (ACA), and confirmed by observations made on Earth Google, would put us at only 2.5 kilometres far from it; so in the worst situation, a quiet walk and…mission accomplished !!!

But this uninhabited and desolated zone is becoming populated with Game Preserves for foreigners and then, 10 kilometres before the confluence in straight line, a big fence and a gate with padlock on our course obligated us to change our plans and delayed us a lot of time.

But luckily things gone that way, because the big loop of more than 40 kilometres led us to see very interesting and exotic places that we not even thought that exists: Path of the “Julepe”, the uninhabited Quiroga’s hut, the dry drainage basin of Chadileuvú river with its odd vegetation and of course, to travel by paths without recent footprints of any type of vehicles in the middle of nothing.

After the lengthy loop around the game preserve named “Paso de los Cojudos” we returned to our original track that approached us up to 2.5 kilometres of the confluence, separated by thick and spiky brush woods, that didn’t justify risking the tires of the vehicles with punctures.

The team of five adventurers with a beginner on board marked the initial waypoint for returning and went into the brushwood, where the sandy floor showed footprints of many wild animals like ostriches, wild boars, partridges, pumas and cows; nevertheless we didn’t see any of them except partridges. Maybe they were watching their next meal…..

After the interesting walk, we approached to the confluence and after the typical “confluence dance”, we finally reached the exact point without minutes and seconds en GPS display. Ricardo was baptized as “confluence hunter” and we enjoyed with the success of the first confluence of the trip.

Due to the delay occasioned by the big loop around the game preserve, we made new plans and decided to go for camping to Agua Poca spring water instead of attempting directly the 37°S 68°W because the darkness wouldn’t allow us to have success, with a lot of risk for the tires. The next day, early in the morning, we would go for the next capture.
