AN EXPEDITION TO THE “INDIOS RANQUELES”

On Sunday we had planned to go catch some confluences in the pampas west. All of them were on parallel 36: 36-66, 36-67 and 36-68.

While observing the satellite photographs, we realized that the confluences were quite easy to reach. The only difficulty could be the isolation of the zone.

With Gabriel Sales, we set off on Sunday 28th, very early in the morning from Santa Rosa, and we prepared ourselves to get the trilogy.

We took National Route 35 to the north and then we turned west by Provincial Route 10, wishing to get, firstly, the 36-66 confluence, taking any of the routes I had put in the GPS by looking the satellite photographs found in Google Earth.

Everything was going great, until we discovered that both of the access roads I had found were closed(A little detail I couldn’t see in the photos…), so, we had only two options: either we came back to enter from Victorica (A route I had discarded because it seemed to be too far away and, by taking it, there would be no time to catch the other two confluences), or we continued blindly to find any path that could send us to the north of Route 10, nearer of 36 parallel. We chose the second option, and if nothing came across, we’d leave the confluence for later.

When we had made at least 15 km on meridian 66, we found a closed (but not locked) gate, what put our hopes up again. Although we were quite away from the objective, we entered by a well-preserved track that would take us to Las Delicias farmhouse. Once there, we could think of what to do.

The landscape was wonderful, as it was a green beautiful dunes zone, where the track was zigzagging by the north east, further and further from the 36-66 confluence. Things were going quite bad: Firstly, we found lonely houses (on Sunday people leaves for the town and we couldn’t ask anybody where we were going), and secondly, one of the tires was losing air. We inflated it with the fire extinguisher and we continued the search, 31 km later, Las Delicias farmhouse, after tossing a coin in a crossroad to decide which road to take. The tire, with the help of “Protepinch”, seemed that had repaired by itself.

There, a peasant gave us two options, not very convinced: to leave La Pampa and enter San Luis province, crossing 36 parallel and try to enter by the north, or to go east by a un-maintained track that was nearly parallel to 36 parallel and was at 6 or 7 km from there (but he didn’t know where the end of it was). We chose this one and little by little we reached the meridian, going along a path in the dunes, which didn’t seem to be usually taken and had a lot of gates to open. Some of them, looked as they hadn’t been open for a long time.

So we reached an inhabited house that was a 25 km from the confluence. There, we could ask again. We were attended politely by Agustín Miranda and his wife, Lidia. He immediately offered himself to help us, though he wasn’t sure of how easily we would be able to reach the confluence.

He said that he could take us to 36 parallel inside his property, San Vicente farmhouse, in order to check if we could drive along it.

We invited him to get in the pickup, and, by a nearly erased track, we arrived to the parallel. It is an invisible inter-provincial limit between San Luis and La Pampa, but it’s materialized by a fence. There was a track, but unfortunately there were no gates to let us pass, and we were still 20 km away of the objective. We discarded this possibility.

So, we came back towards the house “por la costa”, as the say here. It means that we drove near the fence, doing real off-road over the “olivillos” covered dunes, imagining the road. We arrived there when Lidia had started to prepare a great “guiso” (stew), and we were incapable of refusing their invitation to eat with them.

We chatted a lot, and Agustín told us that in the near dunes there is something like a clean sand crater that’s thought by him to be perfect for motocross. Immediately, I get on the pickup while the “guiso” was being prepared, its fantastic smell filling the air.

The hidden crater in the hills was wonderful: Agustín said that it appeared when, a lot of years ago, there used to be as an enclosure for livestock: the goats had eaten all the vegetation of the place. But it never grew again: a true strange thing.

I spent a lot of time having fun with the “sandy” off road , until I got trapped in one of the dunes and I had to use my new anchor for winch, never used before like last resource. The photos are witnesses of what kind of place this is.

We returned to Agustín’s house, took a bottle of wine I always keep for this unexpected occasions from the pickup, and ate the delicious “guiso”, made by Lidia. The clock indicated now two o’clock in the evening, and our time was running out, so we said goodbye, thanking them for all, and we continued by the east on the track that had led us to the house. Opening gates from time to time, as we went ahead, the road was more and more clear and it looked more used.

Once we were near the 66 meridian, we started to check carefully every possible access to the north, until we found a gate which matched with one of the points estimated with the satellite photographs and we entered on a camp that was at 6 km south from the confluence. The track was now going towards the north east, every time more and more rough. We crossed a lot of “boyeros” (electric fences for animals) zigzagging across the camp (as you can see in the photo track attached), until a firewall which was parallel to 36 parallel separated by 1600 m of very closed bushes. However, you could walk through it, if carefully. There was no signal of human living there.

We marked the waypoint where we left the vehicle and walked towards the objective. Soon the pickup disappeared from sight and the GPS was our only guide to go and return. After some time of walking, we saw a fence which indicated where the 36 parallel was. Then we knew we were about to catch the confluence.

We put the GPS exactly where there didn’t exist minutes or seconds: we had done it again. Gabriel was very anxious, as it was his “baptism” as Confluence Hunter.

After taking a lot of photos, the confluence hunt was celebrated, and we went back to the pickup, trusting completely on the GPS. In the middle of the road we thought what would happen if the GPS’ battery died or the satellite reception stopped working because of the cloudy weather. But finally, like magic, the vehicle appeared.

In the way back home we left neatly closed all the gates and took a neighborhood route that we knew, later, that was called Cacique Mariano Rosas, towards Victorica, ending our hunting. No one appeared in the whole last part of the return.

Near Victorica we found a nice memorial evocating the “indios Ranqueles", original inhabitants of the zone until the civilization made them disappear. From here comes the title of this text, copied of the Lucio V. Mansilla’s book, something I strongly recommend to read.

We arrived Santa Rosa after 13 hours of journey, satisfied with the adventure we had lived, which has been very different of what we had imagined in the morning.

Possibly there may be some easier way to arrive to the confluence, but we were glad (and tired) to have reached it in spite of the obstacles. Anybody who does the visit #2 will be able to consider this comment and found some way to access the firewall of the same 36 parallel with the vehicle, avoiding the walk.

We’ll have to sacrifice and try the 3667 and 3668 confluences in another opportunity.
