12-May-2017 -- THE DISDAINFUL CONFLUENCE

Far away at year 2011, together with friends of “Pasión 4x4” from Rosario, we made an unforgettable trip attempting to catch a group of unexplored confluences on 28 Latitude at the province of La Rioja and Catamarca. Specifically, we headed to confluences located between meridian 65 and 68 on a variety of interesting terrains: high mountains, deserts, sand and plains.

We foresaw four days for this trip under the assumption that we could catch more than one visit per day based in our previous experience in Patagonia and 27 Latitude.

This time, in the first confluence attempted, we spent two days with unsuccessful result: despite attempting by the four cardinal points we could only approach until 250 meters. The same happened to Hugo Perret a few weeks ago. Then, this blessed confluence became a very valued trophy always present in our adventures and feverish minds.

At the end of an intricate journey looking for alternative crossings south-north from Jagüé and Vinchina to the Pissis Mount area, we ended climbing the Portezuelo de la Punilla where the Colorado river arises, passing very near of this dreamed confluence. Some of us were defeated by the lure to go for it.

At a hard day's sunset, the team of six 4WD cars divided when we reached the Ulpiadero Canyon from the Colorado river. Three of us went exploring the start of an unknown track along Tamberías river towards Pissis Mount; the last one tried once again to catch the disdainful confluence.

Denis, Tape, Eladio, Pablo, Julio and me went there and then we approached by one of the countless canyons of unbelievable slopes that descend from the mountain's confluence as a river delta of rocks and sand at more than 3200 masl. As before the other times, all seemed to go very well until the vertical wall of more than 100 meters of height that always interposed between us and the confluence appeared as an insurmountable guardian. Nevertheless, we saw a small possibility to go up by foot using one of the ridges of the canyon.

The idea was to do a big bypass of 800 meters ascending by the ridges; from the bottom, the slope seemed reachable and we had three or four hours of light day left to go up. Pablo, Denis, Tape and me joined our willingness and efforts to attempt again the unfulfilled mission to catch the confluence. Tape, the most experienced on climbing, took control of the group and guided us to go up. A few meters, we realized that the hiking wouldn’t be easy: the slope wasn´t very much but the terrain was loose soil where you go two steps up and then you go one step down. The incentive to follow was that the terrain seemed better fifty meters up, with rocks that promised some grip.

With big efforts and with very much adrenalin -at least for beginners as Pablo and me-, zigzagging upward for this slippery toboggan, we reached the “rocks” (the word “rocks” is between quotation marks because they were actually pieces of compacted fill without any support to grip). Status: we barely went up 40 meters and we still were at 400 meters of the confluence. It was unaffordable to climb through these “rocks”. Nevertheless, the new viewpoint showed us other smooth ridge enlarging the hike more than 800 meters and besides, probably without light. Immediately before the “rocks”, the terrain was a little more stable even the slope was bigger; Tape led us by it to look for the new ridge. Denis and Tape moved like goats whereas Pablo and me too, but as paralytic ones. One false step there implied to fall many meters downward by a slope of 45 degree…

Again, with big effort, we reached the new ridge, reducing drastically the distance to the confluence and at least with some chances to enter within the magic circle of 100 meters for successful catching. After two hours fighting with the terrain and slopes we reached the goal. When all seemed to end happily without difficulties, Denis and Tape proposed to go nearer the confluence in order to get “all zeros” because they believed we were able to reach the exact point with the daylight remaining. Pablo and I saw the ridge, we looked at each other, and then we said at the same time: “You are crazy!” Of course, we couldn´t convince them so we decided to wait there until they came back. We gave them some things that we had: GPS, Handy VHF, water, chocolates, and wished them very much luck.

Like spiders, Denis and Tape went up for the steep ridge and quickly they disappeared from our view. These two cursed man would achieve it… Daylight was going out and they didn't return. We were lonely in the mountain and with no radio wouldn't be useful, so we decided to return to the cars before there was no light. Our descent was very difficult because the slope downward was very sleep. When we arrived with our friends Eladio and Julio, they told us that from time to time Denis and Tape informed their status and they still hadn't reached the confluence. On top of the mountain, they found a complex network of canyons and ridges difficult to pass but they were very close of the confluence. Some hours later, already night, we received the expected news: They had reached the exact coordinates and had their foots on the confluence. Now, they were thinking how to return…

But the return wouldn't be easy: a few minutes later, they informed us that the battery of the GPS had no charge left and they were afraid that this also was going to happen with the battery of the VHF radio, so they would communicate only from time to time in order to save battery. They said that they were very good, that they were watching our campfire and told us to make something for dinner because in one hour, they would be with us.

One hour after, then another hour and we only received short messages from them saying: “We are ok, be quiet”. Far away, on the steep hillside, we were seeing two headlights going down where a few hours ago we thought it was impossible to climb. Suddenly, we saw the descent was stopped and then the radio shortly said: “We took the wrong path because we found a vertical fall of 40 meters, impossible to go down. We'll go back over our steps.” The situation was very worrying: false rocks, darkness, tiredness could lead to big problems. We only hoped not to see one headlight going down too fast.

We watched helplessly as the two headlights retraced what has been done two hours before going down but a little faster. Luckily the weather was very well, despite the low temperatures. When the headlight reached the top, it disappeared from our eyes and then they informed that they would sleep there waiting the daylight to be able to find the path for returning. The idea didn't calm us, but it was better than attempting to go down without light.

Of course, all of us forgot the dinner and accommodated in the cars prepared to spend a long night, waiting for the dawn. Practically nobody slept, worried for our friends outdoor at 3200 masl. But we thought: were they telling the truth? Did they sleep or keep walking in darkness? Were they injured? Answers would be known when sunrise came. Unexpectedly from Fiambalá, we received a communication of our other friends and we informed the situation. They were also worried for us by absence of news. Anyway, the news we gave them weren´t the most calming ones.

Inexorably the long night ended and the novelty was that our friend Denis and Tape had passed the night enough well but with cold, huddled in a small canyon on floor of sand (Brokeback Mountain?) and they were returning by other path at north of us, ending on other parallel canyon. It was a happy ending: in one hour they joined us after twelve hours of separation. At first, six of us embraced and then we scolded to Denis and Tape for their dangerous decision.

After all, we only had to go upriver along Ulpiadero River and to find the rest of the group at Fiambalá for returning home. When we arrived where the water divides, surrounding the confluence at 3200 mosl, the surprise was fresh snow at 20 kilometers where Denis and Tape had slept outdoor. Obviously, God was in our team.
