19-Dec-2006 -- Continued from 27S 151E

Now here's one that is not for the faint-hearted. I read the account of two blokes who had done this confluence and they were talking about machetes to cut through the lantana. I wish I had one too that day. I guess I parked around the same place as they did when they did the confluence.

A moderate incline and manageable vegetation for the first 400 metres but then the "fun" began. That lantana is thick as. Sometimes I was taking 5 minutes to cover no more than ten metres. It was very tiring trying to get my feet very high all the time to take a step above those devilish weeds. I managed to get there and very fortunately found the exact spot without having to do too much to-and fro-ing.

I took the pictures just before the battery on the GPS went dead. I was glad I had some spare ones with me because you get very disoriented out there even though the progress is slow. On the way back I even had to crawl under the lantana, using my head as a battering ram. By the time I got back to the car I was completely knackered.

It was as hard as walking 20 kilometres in the sun. Since I started the journey with a tough confluence maybe it was fitting that I ended it in the same fashion. Well that one is over and done with, we can all go and celebrate Christmas.
