20-Jan-2019 -- Long time ago visiting this confluence attracted me a lot. There are no longer many confluences available and it is because of the difficulty of reaching them. This one in particular is in Puna and at a height close to 4000 masl. To this is added that the minimum distance to some inhabited site with the possibility of shelter and food is more than 60 km. The opportunity presented itself and I invited my friend Mario González who without hesitation answered yes. We prepared everything necessary for the trip to Puna and we left from Salta on 19 January 2019 at 6 in the morning.

The idea was to make a circuit to visit as many places of interest as possible. So we planned to go through El Toro gorge and return by Cafayate. As soon as we entered the Quebrada del Toro, the mountains received us with their grandeur and waste of shapes and colors.

We passed Abra Blanca (4,100 masl) and entered the great Puna. Immediately we left behind the town of San Antonio de los Cobres and from there we diverted to Santa Rosa de los Pastos Grandes after passing through the Abra del Gallo. From there we went to Pocitos and took the route that goes to the province of Catamarca. Bordering shimmering solar and contouring mountains we reached the junction that on the right indicated Antofagasta de la Sierra and the opposite Antofalla.

We continued our journey and at about 2:30 pm we stopped in the middle of that immense and desolate plain to eat something and go on. Finally we arrived at Antofalla, a patch of green on the edge of the Salar. Without stopping we continued towards the south and we arrived at a place where the road forks. To the right would cross the Salar and bring us closer to the point at 9 km but the problem was that the Salar is impossible to pass in vehicle and to think about doing it walking implies at least two days.

The other road goes towards a green oasis called the Quinuas which is about 15 km from the point and there the road ends. We decided to take us and ask if they could give us accommodation and food to which they agreed very kindly. With this we would avoid going back to Antofalla, saving time and fuel.

We started skirting the Salar by an old track that was lost at times. Finally we arrived at an abandoned ranch and we ran out of tracks. We were already about 6 km from the confluence and it seemed that we already had it.

We descended from the truck a quadricycle of 250 cc and we were still stuck to the Salar. A little walk and with great joy on our part, we saw reappear the track that was bordering the Salar. The problem was that we were surrounding a mountain that was moving us away from our goal. At last I finished the rodeo and we returned to approach the point but we arrived at about 5 km and the quad no longer went up a steep and very loose sand.

It was already late and we knew that walking what we were missing would take many hours. We decided to go back.

At Las Quinoas, Malvina (our hostess) was waiting for us, with a delicious stew and soup to revive the dead. We went to rest with the purpose of leaving early in the morning.

The next day we took some mates, checked the backpacks, and went out. We arrived with the truck to where we had been the day before and decided to try to get closer with the truck. Struggling with the track we reached a place where we were 900 meters from the confluence but we had to climb a brutal slope. Very vertical.

We went ahead and did not find viable alternatives, so we faced the wall diagonally and stopped at all times because the height was noticeable. After a great effort we reached the edge and the view on the other side was a ripious plateau with our goal at 600 m. We made them without any difficulty and with great joy we arrived.

We returned very happy and we had an exquisite roast lamb waiting for us. We return with the memory of those beautiful shared moments, the very beautiful but desolate and hard Puna, of the Vicuñas running uphill as if they had wings, of a ñandu (Zuri we say to us) who greeted us with their wings spread around the back of a curve, of hot springs with the most spectacular view you can imagine, of the "eyes of the field" lagoons with their intense colors: orange, blue, black.

And already thinking: what will be next?
