#1: Confluence area

(visited by Jeremy McArdle and Luke McArdle)

12-Jun-2016 -- I came across the Degree Confluence Project while researching the areas we planned to visit on our desert trip through Western Australia. Our trip involved over 6000 km of exploring our state mostly using dirt roads built by Len Beadell between 1947 and 1963. If you have the time, look him up, he was an amazing man.

I liked the idea of creating a tiny bit of history, so we looked for a point along our path that hadn’t been visited. The nearest one was 26 km east of the Gary Highway which runs between the Gibson and Great Sandy Deserts.

My brother and I loaded our quads with recovery gear, spare tyres and an Esky and headed off. The terrain varied a bit over the 26 km but was mostly typical of West Australian Deserts, Spinifex, Mulga scrub and thousands of low termite mounds. An hour and 15 minutes to get there.

We talked about something being on the point before we left and when we got there right on the mark was a dead Mulga tree. If you want to feel like you are the only person on the planet this is the place to go. Literally in the middle of nowhere.

A few beers and photos later we were on our way back. Special thanks to Glenn, Steve, Cobber, Cully, Woodsy and Spud who set up camp while we were gone and to Roger for guiding us in with his headlights on the hill (it was pitch black dark by the time we got back).
