#1: The Confluence from 10 m

(visited by Rainer Mautz)

16-Dec-2020 -- This is the last out of 4 confluence reports on my two-week bicycle trip (2000 km) through Namibia. The story starts from 21°S 19°E and continues from 20°S 15°E.

On the 11th day of my bicycle trip in Namibia, I got up at 4:40 AM in Khorixas which is 100 km north of this confluence point. Unfortunately, I had left my headphones in my hotel in Kamanjab, and noticed it only after riding a couple of kilometres. I found them, but was now one hour later on the road.

When I reached the turnoff to the confluence, the sun was exactly in the zenith (15E at 1 PM, 21S on DEC 15th). The confluence is 7 km from the gravel road M76 (“M” stands here certainly not for “Motorway”) between Khorixas and Uis, but a sandy track leads up to a distance of 1.4 km to the confluence point. Cycling on that track was a little crazy, because thorns threatened to flatten my tires, sand slowed me partially down to walking speed and the sun was as intense as she can be. I abandoned my bike under a tree in 1.4 km distance and walked the rest.

The confluence is covered with bare grit (sand and gravel), but from the stubbles you can tell, that there is high grass after rain: see how it looks in April when Babs and Helmut visited the point. Besides the stubbles, there are some scattered Arcadia trees. The stone cross laid on the ground by the first visitors 2004 is still unchanged.

After the visit I returned back to my bicycle the same way that I had come and cycled back to the main road. I continued cycling southwards, reaching Uis in the later afternoon. The following days I cycled back to my starting point at Windhoek, without any confluence visits. I did try to visit two additional points, but due to closed gates and no contact numbers given, I didn’t dare to enter the properties.

The story finishes here, but will continue in South Africa.
