14-Sep-2020 --

The COVID-19 pandemic obliged me to cancel the trips that I had planned for this year of 2020, including an international one, and spoiled the increasing of my visited confluences list. After my last successful confluence visit, the 16S 41W one, in March, I must interrupt the visits during the five following months. In reality, during these five months, I attempted two new visits, to confluences 18S 44W and 15S 44W, close enough to my home to go there in only one day, without spending the night in a hotel. However, in both cases, the attempts weren’t successful, due to hardness accessing the exact point, and I didn’t even write the narrative of these incomplete visits.

Now, in September, with the pandemic starting to decrease, and I being obliged to take my vacations and without making the planned trips, I decided to dedicate my vacations to a long trip by car, aiming to visit eight new confluences. As my wife would accompany me in this trip, some touristic destinations were included in this long trip, but taking care to avoid places potentially with large agglomerations, such as beach cities.

In September 12, Saturday, we started our trip in our home in Montes Claros city, Minas Gerais state, and travelled the first 760 kilometers up the touristic city of Caldas Novas, in Goiás state, where we would spend the first two nights of the trip. Caldas Novas is considered the biggest hydrothermal resort of the world and the main tourist destination of Goiás state.

In the following day, September 13, we spent the day in the nearby city of Rio Quente, 28 kilometers far from Caldas Novas, where lies the Hot Park Resort, a big touristic complex where the main attraction are the hot water pools. At the end of the afternoon, we came back to our hotel in Caldas Novas.

Finally, at September 14, Monday, the day of our first confluence visits arrived. We started the trip about 8:00 and headed up to Itumbiara city. On the way, we passed by Buriti Alegre small city and I remembered that I had passed by this city seven months before, because it is the nearest city of 18S 49W confluence and was cited in that narrative.

From Itumbiara, we went ahead by BR-452 highway by more 120 kilometers up to turn right and start the dirt road leg. In this highway, the car market the first 1000 kilometers of our trip.

The dirt road leg, 17 kilometers long, was in good condition, although there were some more complicated areas with a lot of dust, which hindered the passage. A characteristic of this region is the very red and dusty earth, which get the car very dirty and also make big dust swirls. I took a photo of this kind of dust swirl in my visit to 17S 48W, also in Goiás state, in September 2018. In this new trip, I saw them much more frequently, some of them very big and one of them passed exactly over our car, when we were on the dirt road.

I stopped the car 740 meters to the confluence, left the car and hiked the remaining distance, across an area of harvested plantation easily walkable. I got all GPS zeroes easily.

We made all the way back up to the highway and resumed the trip, already thinking about to find a place to have lunch, because it was after noon. When we are in front of the access to the small city of Castelândia, the highway was totally blocked, due to works. As we would need to wait some minutes up to the unblocking of the highway, we decided to drive the six kilometers up to the city and to search there a place to have lunch. We found a very simple restaurant, but with good food. We had lunch and resumed the trip.

This narrative continues on 18S 51W.
