#1: The Confluence from 10 m

(visited by Rainer Mautz and Elionora)

05-May-2021 -- This is the fourth out of 5 confluence visits on our drive through the North-East of Namibia. The story starts from 20°S 13°E and continues from 19°S 14°E.

We started from the Kapika Waterfall Lodge at the Epupa Falls at a distance of 31 km from the confluence point. After a quick drive of 6 km on road C43, we reached a 4WD track branching off at a driving distance to the confluence of 25 km. From the satellite image we saw that this track would get us as close as 100 m to the confluence point. The further we drove along that track, the rougher it got. At a remaining distance of 2.4 km we were encountered with a very steep hill with loose gravel. Here we decided to surrender the car and walk. Local Himba people encouraged us to continue by car, but we preferred to explore the beautiful hills above Cunene River on foot.

We ascended to a mountain pass and descended into a wide valley with spectacular views. Indeed, we manage to walk along the track up to 100 m distance. I then scumbled upwards a mountain flank covered with loose boulders to zero out the confluence point.

On the return, we gave a Himba man a ride for 20 km until he reached his village. Obviously, it was his first time that he buckled up in a car, as I had to explain to him that principle first.
