#1: Confluence Point as viewed from the east

(visited by Derek Moore, Peter Murdoch, Jake Murdoch and David Eames)

26-Aug-2007 -- The confluence point was visited successfully during the dry season. An initial attempt in the wet season was abandoned due to a flooded river crossing.

The trip involved a 190km drive from Nhulunbuy to the region. We then drove the Land Rover several hundred metres into the bush but left the last 1.6km to walk to the confluence point. The point is approached by dirt track which leads off the Central Arnhem Highway (Bullman Track) to the Gan Gan homeland community. Road conditions were dusty, dry but generally good.

The area is a mixture of open savanah, lightly treed and very low lying in some places with potential for flooding in the wet season. There were a number of large (3-5m tall) termite mounds and also numerous magnetic termite mounds.

We were able to walk right to the confluence point and were amazed to find that at what the GPS listed as 13S 136E there was a magnetic termite mound. These little guys always orientate the mounds so the run north-south but who would have thought they'd build on a confluence point!
