22-Oct-2002 -- Our long trip to Djanet in the far south-east of Algeria started in Ohanet, the last fuel station encircled by some very primitive houses (28° 41.099'N, 8° 53.622'E). There I filled up all my tanks with 420 litres gas oil, because we intended to travel an estimated distance of over 1600 km off-road in an unknown area with no chance of refuelling.

The point 28N 8E is located in a big valley surrounded by a huge area of sand dunes named Erg Isaouane. In the Sahara such a valley is called "Gassi". So we had to find an easy way through the dunes and after nearly two days we reached this Gassi.

After a cold night and a wonderful sunrise in the dunes we started in the morning of 22 October 2002 and drove to the west exactly on the 28th latitude to reach the 8th longitude (see the blue line in the last picture). After 192 km in the dunes of Erg Isaouane we stopped our cars just a few meters before the point and walked to the point. There we placed a little red flag with our names on it.
