21-Aug-2001 -- This confluence is no walk in the park. As I can not remember the last time I went for a walk, I don't know what I was doing out hiking in the woods.

I was visiting my father who owns Argyle Lake Lodge near Matachewan. We went out on the ATV's in the morning and packed a lunch. After exploring other areas we decided to go and find this degree confluence.

We put the degree confluence into the GPS and entered GO TO. The ATV trails got us one kilometer away from our destination. We started our hike into the forest at around 2pm.

The forest was dense with numerous dead fallen trees and rocks. At one point we stopped for a break and discovered a large paper wasp nest in a tree over our heads. When we got half way we encountered a large rock cliff and could not find a way up directly. We skirted the side of the cliff to get around it.

Once we got within 60 feet of the degree confluence our GPS started taking us in circles. We did a couple figure eights and it kept taking us across one spot. We accepted this as GPS error and took our pictures of the area.

The walk out was slightly easier and we realized this was because the way in was all up hill. It took us nearly three hours going in and coming back out all together.

I would like to thank my father's girl friend (Marlene) for staying with the ATV's and guarding them from the moose and bear. I would think twice before trying to attempt a remote degree confluence like this again.
