#1: La confluence N49-W074 - The N49-W074 confluence

(visited by Bruno Girard and Colonel Walker)

English

31-Aug-2003 -- I left at 7:01 am of the campsite of Chibougamau to go to my second confluence of the weekend (see N50, W74), my third in life (in the two last weeks).

7:07 am: stop to have breakfast to the restaurant of Lac Caché, on the corner of roads 167 and 113. 7:41 am: I resumes the road 167 southward. 137 km farther, in the "Réserve faunique Ashuapmushuan" (there where we watch for the moose), I turn to the right on the forest road R0212. It is now 8:58 am and I am 51,3 km of the objective.

After 61 km of road I cross the river Marquette and goes out of the faunique reserve. Five kilometers farther I have to let the automobile to penetrate into the Quebecois primeval forest. I am 2,56 km as the crow flies of the confluence and it is 10:01 am.

I does not however take the shortest road because I have to avoid a lake and some brooks. I takes the True North on approximately 900 meters ( 1200 steps) by leaving an orange-coloured flag in every 100 steps for my return. It is 10:56 am.

Then I adjust my compass to 326 ° and I so cover about 1500 meters ( 2040 steps) before being able to take a coordinated with my GPS (the forest is very dense!). I have to restart in the azimuth 291 ° on 350 m. It is now 12:12 am.

After 300 new meters the GPS indicates me that I am close. I have only to steer me northward on hundred of meters. At noon forty, the GPS confirms me my arrival to the confluence so looked for. Photos shooting and installation of flags occupy some next minutes.

Naturally, the colonel Walker was anxious to be photographed for the occasion together with his GPS for which he does not still have to bring extra bateries. Also notice that he has to forget to change of T-shirt and I have of to change the 50 of the day before for one 49.

We can say that this Walker is neglectful. I also found that there was a funny smell in my rucksack. At 2:08 pm I was back in the car, at 3:00 pm on the road 167 and at 5:12 pm I was at home (N48 ° 26 ' 07.1", W71 ° 13 ' 42.6").
