#1: Looking towards the point

(visited by Ferdi Schenck, Fraser Schenck, Ferdinand Schenck and Fraser (sr) Schenck)

10-Jan-2003 -- The last stop of our summer holiday was a visit to my brother in Jeffrey's Bay, the surfing capital of South Africa. 34S 25E is an offshore confluence point, located in the ocean about 9 km from my brother's front door. Peter Hers previously attempted this CP, and as our stay was only for two days, I would not have enough time to organise a boat to go out to sea to find it. But being so close to an unvisited Confluence without doing something about it can cause intense frustration.

As a consolation I decided to see how close I could get on land. I made some enquiries and found out that the tenant of the farm Papiesfontein, which would be the closest point on land, was an acquaintance of my brother. Accompanied by my brother Fraser and my two sons, Ferdinand and Fraser, we set off for the farm and followed the farm road up to the homestead where the road terminated. This would leave a time-consuming hike to the beach, and I decided not to pursue it any further. From this point the Confluence was a further 3.96 km, and we estimated that that the CP could be 2 km out to sea from the closest point on land. So with a last longing stare out to sea, we left it for a next time.
