26-Oct-2002 -- Our Australian tour was drawing to an end, but I needed one last blast of the Outback... and of course there just happened to be another confluence or two along the route I chose.

After spending a day hiking in the Flinders Ranges National Park, I headed north towards the Gammons Ranges National Park. North of Wirrealpa, I found that the road came close but was still over 6km from the confluence. By driving towards the tank and the windmill pictured, I was able to get to within 5.92km of the confluence but no tracks led the right direction. I drove further north hoping for the usual fence and found it (since property in Australia is often bounded by a latitude or longitude line, there is usually a fence within a few hundred meters). I drove west along the fenceline track until the track became too overgrown. Still 6.09 kilometers away, I guess it is time for my new favorite sport -- Confluence Jogging. Off across the plains I went, startled goats running away at the sight. Over a small hill and then lo and behold, the confluence is actually in an interesting spot -- right in the middle of a beautiful creekbed. Dry of course but full of gracious gum trees.

Whenever heading to a confluence, you always hope it will be somewhere stunning and interesting, but in fact they usually end up being fairly boring. The fun is in the search and you can always keep hoping. But every once in a while you get a truly beautiful spot and this was certainly one.
