#1: The confluence 133E 30S

(visited by Patricia and John Durkin and John Forehan)

16-Jul-2005 -- We finished capturing the confluence at 11.19am it was a cold/dry morning after a quite chilly night camping out on the dog fence. What's the dog fence?? It's the longest man made structure in the world designed to keep the Dingo (Australian wild dog) on one side and the sheep safe and snug on the other... well okay that's the theory!! In reality it is a massive undertaking which began prior to federation and is still intact and being well kept by the pastoral stakeholders and the various state governments. Why were we out on the fence?? We were fascinated by the concept of the fence and as an interested party we applied for and received (no mean feat) permission to traverse various sections of the fence, the fence is under constant supervision and repair and one can only be impressed at the dedication of those whose job it is to carry out this work in such remote and harsh conditions.
