#1: Confluence from 30m northwest

(visited by Doug Thompson)

30-Jul-2004 -- This was my fourth CP on my trip from Perth to Darwin and return. And the second since meeting up with my father who lives in Broome. From 15°S 132°E we went to Darwin and caught up with several old friends. On the return journey we called in at Litchfield National Park and Daly River. Then it was down the Stuart Hwy and turning right onto the Buchanan Hwy towards Top Springs. We camped for the night about 30km east of Top Springs.

In the morning we headed in to Top Springs and turned right heading north on the Delemere road. After 68km we turned right on to an unmapped road right opposite the road to Killarney station. Another 6 or 7km down this road and we were 3.45km southwest of the CP. We thought that we could find a closer spot to begin the walk, but after a lot of driving up and down various tracks we settled on the first option. My father thought 7km through the bush was too much so he stayed with the vehicle. I set off at 1140 and arrived at the CP at 1240. I stopped every km for a drink of water. In some places the grass was nearly up to my waist so I could not see the ground I was walking on. On the return journey I stopped and took a photo of a large termite mound. I arrived back at the car at 1350 after my longest walk for a CP.
