29-Dec-2002 --

This confluence forms part of an eleven-confluence journey that starts at 27°S 150°E.

After a fairly rough road into Byrock, we headed down the Mitchell Highway as far as Coolabah where we refuelled. After a nice chat with the elderly lady running the general store in Coolabah, we headed east on the road to Quambone and took a right turn on Doneys Road.

After passing through a couple of stations, Doneys Road deteriorated into a track that was at times hard to distinguish from other farm tracks. Following my trusty GPS, however, we navigated ourselves to within about 600 metres of the confluence and then drove cross-country to park the car right at the confluence.

The severe drought that much of Australia is experiencing at the moment was quite evident here with a recently deceased carcass of a cow about 400 metres from the confluence that smelt really bad.

The confluence is located on the “Gundooee” Station, the homestead for which was another 5 or 6 kilometres away close to Gongolgan Road. We popped in to say hello and explained what we are doing and were given directions as to the best way to get on to Gongolgan Road and on to Quambone.

Continued at 31°S 148°E.
