13-May-2016 -- Having successfully visited the confluence 54°N 62°E, I continued my way from Troitsk town to Nikolayevka village through Varna, and further on, to 53°N 62°E. Approaching Nikolayevka (the village is located in the border zone, so one needs a permit to enter there), I saw a church towered above the village, it was fenced by solid stone wall, so I thought that's a monastery. It turned out that it was a fortress.

South part of Chelyabinsk region is not the Urals, it's rather historical trans-Orenburg region and continuous steppes from Troitsk to Orsk. From the 1830s it was known as Novolineynyi [New Line] district, or Little Europe. Earlier there were camping grounds of Kazakh and Bashkir nomadic; later, after the Khan Kenesary uprising nogaybaki people moved here, they are Christian descendents of Volga Tatars and they were Cossacks of Orenburg troops. They named their villages in honor of the conquered towns and won battles: Paris, Berlin, Leipzig, Varna, Warsaw... Actually, Varna village is a district center (Nikolayevka belongs to the district). However, it all began with the two fortresses of New Line, built in 1835–36 years – Nikolayevka and Nasledinki, shutting the grand chain of fortifications that ran along the boundaries of the Great Steppe from the Altai to the Caspian Sea.

The fortress stands in the center of the village, and is clearly visible from the road. In essence, it is nothing like "the temple of the defense", like the ones that were built in the Middle Ages in Eastern Europe. It was built in the years 1835–36, and its wall is a regular quadrilateral measuring 70 by 70 meters. And most impressive is that this fortress had a chance to participate in a real war. It was build very timely, as in 1837 in the Kazakh steppes Kenesary Kasimov rose in rebellion. Kenesary was the last Kazakh Khan Chingizid, grandson of the legendary Abylai, which declared its independence, and restoration the Khan's power as a main goal.

In the years 1839-43, at the top of the Kazakh revolt, Nikolayevka fortress withstood 8 raids. Although its strengthening is not look too terrible, it was enough against the nomads with medieval weapons and tactics. Today the fortress wall serves, in fact, the case features the church fence, and if you do not know its history, one might think that this is a purely decorative element. The gate is unlocked only in the service.

In the Cossack troops and villages the churches have always occupied a special place: it was either an assembly hall or a castle tower. In the church the Cossacks took counsel, discussed what to deal with the enemy that come up, and also shot at the enemies from its towers. The rest of the buildings inside the fortress were probably adobe or wooden, and therefore did not survive, there is now an empty courtyard.

With all the modesty of their appearance, it is really valuable monument: Cossack fortresses, regularly mentioned in the Russian classic literature, have almost disappeared. More known fortress in Novokuznetsk (Siberia) and in Nazran (Caucasus), but the former is, in fact, a remake, and not everyone dares to go to latter one. Most likely, such fortresses have survived anywhere else in the Caucasus.

But I did not drive into the village, not to spend time for communication with the border guards. On the bridge I stopped to take some pictures. A swarm of small and furious mosquitoes instantly pounced on me. I flew into the car as a bullet and continued driving.

After the bridge, I turned right and after 600 meters I achieved the goal. The confluence is located on a large plowed field in Varna district of Chelyabinsk region. I came out of the car and again the hordes of mosquitoes met me. Where did they come from? … Here among the lands! I quickly performed visiting procedure and departed on the way to the next confluence 53°N 61°E. Nevertheless at the bridge I made a couple of pictures of the castle and then during a few kilometers I were trying to get rid of the bloodsuckers in the car.
